I think he's a sensible replacement for Struijk. Someone who is used to playing in a back three and is good in the air, both in his own box and in attacking set-pieces. His overall success rate in the air when defending them is massive. Often, it's not just a mindless clearance, but a controlled one, even though he's super, super active in the box. He reads the game well.
I'd say the passing profile is quite similar, probably not a huge upgrade in that matter, also let's see how adventurous he is as he eases into a new league and how quickly he'll adapt. But yeah, it would be a much bigger topic if he had to slot into a back four. At 23, he still has some resale value, so the fee is likely alright
